I think my brides are more conscious about being lavish with their events, and they are planning closer to home!

The church I worked had more weddings in June of 2007 than in all of 2008! Many of the local photographers mentioned a large drop in business in 2008. Currently there are almost 2x the 2008 weddings scheduled for 2009... of course, now that I left that job it doesn't affect me, but it is still good to see!

I have a wedding and event planning business in California and YES, business has definately been affected. Brides are going much smaller and using friends for assistance. But, fortunately many of the wineries are requiring professional coordinators, so life's good there.

I've seen a decrease in full planning bookings and am booking more day-of packages. So my thinking cap has gone on to beat this recession! It's been a time for me to think about the future and I'm happy with some of the ideas that have come out of this!

In 2009 I am doing less quantity but selling higher packages, more partial or full planning as opposed to a lot of day-of in 2008. Most vendors in our area are complaining that business is slow and I see a lot of vendors picking up part time or full time jobs outside of this industry. I think if you can stick it out for the next year or two you will come out ahead.

I hear the word "budget" every time they come in my shop. I am doing more day of and less total packages. Brides want to save money & do as much as they can themselves. Several have made their own bouquets. They are cutting back on specialty linens, rentals, and expensive invitations.
Hope 2010 is better!

Personally, I've noticed that more and more brides are waiting until the very last minute to book their MUA's (makeup artists..ie..me).

The email's I've gotten say something like " I know this is last minute, but are you available on such and such".. Later when speaking with them, I find that they tell me they were waiting to see if they could find some one to do it for free so they can save the money before they actually booked someone.

I can totally relate, it's just a shame that these brides are going without professional makeup application for a professional photo that they will have for the rest of their lives.

I hope as the economy gets better, so will timely bookings:)

I'm seeing quite a bit of that kind of thing too...and not just for Day of Coordination packages either...they're waiting to book florals with only 6-8 weeks left til the wedding, because they figured they could do it all themselves, or they're looking for a vendor who's willing to give steep discounts because of the late booking and the desperate need to fill a slot.

It's unfortunate really - because this means they're not going to actually get what they really want - and they're going to be really disappointed when they hear how much it's still going to cost them.
