Myths are just that, myths
There was a time when online dating was considered to be losers business. Many people were taunted for using such sites, and even to this day, most visitors are ashamed to acknowledge they use such services. Yet, in spite of all this, approximately 40 million people in the US use dating sites. There are many dating myths surrounding these sites but you’d be surprised at how many of them are actually false. So with this in mind, we would like to debunk some of the most popular myths and touch upon a few obscure ones as well. Let’s get started!
When you ask someone who is against online dating sites whether they are worth visiting, you’ll certainly get the good old “Nah, don’t be a child, it never works out”. But this, ladies and gentleman, isn’t true whatsoever. For starters, how on Earth might they possibly know whether or not works? That’s right, they don’t. In reality, a third of marriages start online and as time goes by, this number continues to grow. It’s one of those online dating myths that doesn’t have a solid bone to it and is completely unjustified.
This one might seem true and to some degree, it is. You see, pictures are important in online dating, but they aren’t the determining factor. In other words, pictures will only get you so far and just like “traditional” dating, it boils down to your personality. If the guy is good-looking but a total jerk, it doesn’t matter, right? So for those of you who still believe that pictures are everything, they are not. It’s of the most annoying online dating myths one can bring up in a conversation.
Here’s another popular one. Dating sites aren’t scams and work similarly to Facebook. Their core mission is to gather an audience, provide them with a pleasant experience, and ultimately sell ads to stay afloat. This a business model that has been used by many websites and it’s not going anywhere. Also, some online dating sites don’t have any ads.
You don’t have to go online to lie. Like really, this is something that boggles our mind. Sure, you can set up a random picture, put false information, and you’re good to go. For like 10 minutes. Most websites employ an anti-cheat system that will detect where the picture comes from and if it’s legit. You still can outmaneuver the protection mechanism, but then what’s the point? Sometimes online dating myths just go wild but don’t fall for that.
This one is actually true to some degree. There are plenty of websites that offer paid services and if you opt for the freemium experience, we wish you luck. Many sites will filter out potential matches or outright block messaging. However, there are free alternatives that won’t cost you a penny. We suggest that you do some research before you dish out money. Lastly, sites that require your credit card info don’t usually have a lot of active users. Keep that in mind.
This isn’t true. It’s like saying that video games are for children. There are plenty of users of different ages. For example, most DoULike.com visitors are 25-35 years old. However, it’s true that there are a lot of young souls there, but it is due to the fact that the older generation doesn’t know how to use these sites. So, if you are having difficulties, don’t worry, there are many guides on how to succeed at online dating.
One the final note
There are many online dating myths but they aren’t necessarily true. Some of them do make sense, but most myths are made up by people who didn’t use them. The general statistics continues to grow and we think that in a couple of years, it’ll be the go-to place for meeting new people.
