Wedding cakes are beautiful, creative, unique and hopefully taste good too. But do you know the the tradition behind the wedding cake?
According to experts, wedding cakes have been around since the Roman times. The Romans baked a small bun that was broken above the bride's head at the close of the ceremony. The cake's main ingredient - wheat - meant fertility and the crumbs were eagerly gathered by the guests as good-luck charms.
In the Middle Ages wedding cakes evolved into a stack of small cakes provided by the guests. The bride and groom then kissed over the pile of small cakes.
By Elizabethan times the cakes were baked by the bridesmaids and they served as the centerpiece for the wedding feast.
But the first tiered wedding cake didn't appear until the 17th century by a French baker. He stacked the cakes made by the bridesmaids and frosted them so that they would stand upright. Voila, the first tiered wedding cake was born.
Your wedding cake should be as individual as you and your wedding. It should reflect your personalityand taste and make your guests' mouths water in anticipation of having a slice.
Meet with several cake artists and taste samples before deciding on a flavor. Be creative and mix unusual flavors together. You will be surpised at the results.
Most of all have fun and happy wedding planning!
