It’s Thanksgiving readers, and at my house that means making pies! This is the time when I take that calorie count and throw it out the window. There is something I have noticed about pies this year though. They are getting fancy! Crusts are now intricate braids and carefully cut leaves. This got me to thinking about the trend of having pies at your wedding instead of a cake.
At first I didn’t really like the idea. Cakes are traditional and elegant, and you can’t put a topper on a pie! Then, I went back to my love for pie. I had to take into account that many people do not like cake, and therefore spending money on one for their wedding would be ridiculous. Pies can be elegant too. They satisfy a sweet tooth. You can also put toppers on them. This is where I had an idea that came straight out of my grandma’s kitchen. Pie birds.
My grandma collects pie birds, and if you don’t know what they are; a pie bird is a ceramic device, usually shaped like a bird that acts as a chimney and prevents the filling from boiling over. These birds come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and would also function as the most adorable toppers. They are also a unique item to save to remember your wedding.
