The floral wedding can be tricky – after all, for most of us the word “floral” calls up such un-modern-wedding-like images as grandma’s tablecloth, grandma’s curtains, and, well, grandma. But for floral-loving brides who want beautiful blooms to play a larger role than just bouquets and centerpieces, there are definitely ways to incorporate a fresh and modern floral motif throughout your wedding.
Some tips for doing floral weddings right for 2013:
1. The Wedding Dress. We’re not suggesting you swath yourself in layer upon layer of giant rosettes (unless you want to of course), but there are tons of fabulous modern wedding dresses that incorporate a floral motif in any number of ways, from a subtle floral lace to floral appliques, to more bold floral embellishments in the form of three-dimensional accents, belts and pins.
While you can certainly use color as well (a colored belt with floral embellishment, for example is one way) you’ll find many wedding dresses that simply feature these gorgeous floral elements in a tone-on-tone (i.e. ivory on ivory) fashion, for a more subtle take on floral.
2. The Bridesmaid Dress. Bridesmaids in floral dresses is not necessarily anything new, but if you want to do them in a very 2013 way, think bold graphic pattern (featuring one or two colors) or softer florals in a more limited or muted palette (forget the super bright multi-colored florals that make us think of a 6-year-old in a sundress – for this year, anyway).
If floral dresses are too much but you want blooms to still be your central wedding theme, consider a neutral bridesmaid dress (ivory, beige, pale petal pink) which can create a gorgeous backdrop for bold floral bouquets, and can even be paired with some fierce floral shoes if you like!
3. Wedding Linens. It’s totally possible to do a floral motif wedding linen without going on floral overload – the trick is to keep the colors in check, meaning using a neutral toned floral linen with a subtle pattern or a single-color floral pattern on a neutral solid background. That way, the linens will carry the theme without competing painfully with whatever floral centerpieces you have going on.
If there’s a vintage element to your theme, it’s also possible to use floral-patterned china as well, but remember – tiny, delicate, subtle are your keywords to remember.
4. Floral Accessories. To boost the bloom quotient at your floral wedding without going over-the-top, consider accessories with floral elements – shoes with a floral embellishment, say, or a sweet little handbag of soft fabric rosettes. We’re seeing more brides go for flowers in the hair as well, either for herself and/or her bridesmaids, but in a very modern way – either a subtle, neutral bloom, or a simple delicate floral wreath with, or in lieu of, a veil.
