Things to Consider When Hiring a Wedding DJ

Hiring a DJ for your wedding is an important task that you don’t want to rush through. Choosing the wrong DJ can put a damper on your wedding reception. Therefore, you will want to take certain things into consideration when making your choice.

When asking a potential DJ questions you will want to determine whether or not they are a full time DJ. If they are, find out if they specialize in weddings. In general, for the best possible service you will want to find one who does. They often understand better than other DJs all the intricacies that go into a wedding. There is a whole list of questions to ask your wedding DJ, but this is definitely the most important.

A qualified wedding DJ will be comfortable with helping you make your music selections. DJs know better than anyone what kind of music people will get up and dance to. They will also take into account any songs that you do not want them to play. Another consideration is whether or not they will take song requests from your guests. If you and your DJ choose to allow requests it is always helpful to appoint one member of the wedding party to determine if a request should be played or not.

The equipment your wedding DJ uses can make or break your music. Ask if they have backup equipment on hand in the event the equipment they usually use malfunctions during the reception. You will also want to ensure that the volume of the music is not too loud or too quiet. Your DJ should be able to make any necessary adjustments to the volume of the music at your request.

Some wedding venues are booked more often than others. This means you will want to consider whether or not your DJ has performed a wedding there before. If they have, they already know the acoustics of the venue. If they haven’t you will want to find out if they can visit your venue in advance so that they can get a feel of what exactly they need to setup and where.

It is not unusual for today’s DJs to bring more than just music equipment with them. Many will bring their own HD video screens and even lighting equipment. This is often an option you can request from a professional DJ and it can make your reception more meaningful. One way to take advantage of an HD screen is to display pictures during the bride and groom’s first dance as well as the mother/son, father/daughter dance. Keep in mind that both lighting and an HD screen are optional so if your DJ tries to force you to include both of them in your package, choose another DJ instead. Typically the role of a good wedding DJ is to be helpful and transparent, yours should never pressure you to rent something from them that you don’t want or need.

Lastly, it is helpful to ask your DJ to state the reasons why you should hire them. A qualified, professional DJ will have no problem answering this question in an honest and polite manner.
