With the cost of getting married in your home country rising into the tens of thousands, more and more couples are now choosing to get married abroad. The cost, however, isn’t the only reason many are now choosing to tie the knot abroad. 24% of couples opt to marry abroad due to the guaranteed sunny weather, as well as a considerable number saying they like the idea of getting married on the coast surrounded by a close-knit circle of family and friends.

Whether you and your partner want to elope or have an intimate ceremony somewhere a little different, I’ve rounded up a list of the most popular destinations to get married abroad:

Italy

It’s easy to see why many couples choose to get married in Italy. As well as the country’s fantastic cuisine, affordable prices and beautiful landscapes, places like Lake Garda, Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast offer the perfect backdrops for a wedding in Italy. If you want to be surrounded by Italian culture and old Italian traditions then the old town of Sorrento or Rome are ideal locations.

Greece

With stunning islands such as Santorini, Mykonos and Crete, Greece is home to a number of destinations that are perfect for a magnificent wedding. It’s unbeatable Greek cuisine, clear-blue seas and caldera’s lined with crisp white buildings and blue rooftops paired with Greece’s friendly culture, historical monuments and calm atmosphere makes Greece one of the most luxurious wedding destinations.

France

Boasting breathtaking greenery and charming chateauxs, France offers the chance to have a traditional inspired, intimate wedding. Coupled with warm climates, particularly in the South of France and excellent cuisine, France ticks all the boxes when it comes to the perfect destination wedding. If that doesn’t convince you then the fact that France is home to the finest wines and champagnes in the world. Why not get married on a vineyard and have an endless supply to celebrate your newlywed status in style!

Cyprus

Known as the island of love, it’s no surprise that Cyprus is amongst the best destinations if you are looking to get married abroad. The golden beaches, crystal clear waters and warm climate make the perfect setting for an idyllic wedding ceremony and reception. For those who prefer a more classic wedding, Cyprus boasts quaint tavernas, chapels and churches, ideal for a traditionally stunning wedding.

Las Vegas

No wedding destination list would be complete without mentioned Las Vegas. For many years, a Las Vegas wedding and the infamous “Little White Chapel” has been an iconic part of the Vegas culture, with many flocking to Las Vegas for a fun-filled, cheap wedding. The novelty of a wedding in Sin City and the idea of being married by an Elvis impersonator has led thousands of couples to flock there to tie the knot. However, if you fancy something a little more classy, world-famous luxury hotels such as The Bellagio offer stunning, various size rooms to cater for small to large ceremonies and wedding parties. Of course, the after-party promises to be memorable too.

Don’t forget, if you are getting married abroad, there may be some paperwork to fill out before you go. For example, many countries require full birth certificates, a certificate of no impediment or to contact the local town hall for permission. Depending on the country, there are different rules and documents that you must complete. Consult your government website or immigration solicitors to check before you book.
