Portugal is quite frankly a stand out country to spend your honeymoon at. It has wonderful cities, Lisbon chief amongst them, but by no means the only one, which drips in history, culture and amazing food.
Portugal is also blessed with both one of the sunniest climates in Europe along with one of the best coastlines. This combination has led to Portugal becoming something of a gold standard as far as beach honeymoons go.
With so much choice however, it can be hard to know which beaches are best. To help you out, here is our breakdown of some of the best beaches Portugal has to offer.
Holiday in the Algarve can truly be the stuff dreams are made of. This remote beach provides some truly breathtaking natural scenery. Turquoise waters lap at clean, golden sands and this beach, carved from a sandy rock face, is almost dreamlike in its beauty.
The cliffs, which provide such a stunning backdrop, also provide a secondary benefit. Because access is limited to the cliffside steps, the beach is naturally less crowded than many others in this area.
So yes, it is a bit more of an effort to get to this beach – but the rewards when you do get there make it very much worth it.
From beautiful seclusion we turn now to a bustling beach that is pretty much the opposite of the one listed above.
Nazare used to be a sleepy little fishing village. It now relies more on tourism to fund the town economy, a wise decision given the beautiful natural asset they have at their disposal. The long stretch of clean, golden sand is always busy, but you will find space somewhere to lay your beach towel and soak up some vitamin D.
The benefit here is that when you get bored of sun worship, the town and it’s excellent selection of bars and restaurants is only a short stroll away.
How about an island of beaches?
Ok, how about picking the very best beach on an island of beaches?
The Ilha de Tavira is a sandbar island connected to the mainland by a regular ferry service. The island is home to a number of truly outstanding beaches, chief amongst them being the Praia de Tavira.
The appeal of the island, and this beach in particular, is how remote it all seems. This beach is so vast, and the island so undeveloped that vast stretches contain nothing as far as the eye can see but sand.
And what sand – soft and crumbly, it has the texture of dark sugar and is just so comfortable to lie down on and walk over you’ll wonder why every surface on earth can’t be covered in sand from this beach!
It’s not complete desolation either – the beach is dotted with romantic little bar-restaurants for a drink or a meal in these stunning surrounds.
A completely different landscape now at Foz de Minho, which is Portugal’s most northerly lying beach.
The beach lies at the point where the Rio Minho River flows out into the Atlantic. Its backdrop of mountains and pine forests is both unique and beautiful, with this beach providing rugged views unparalleled anywhere else in the country.
A wooden boardwalk traces the coastline, meaning that taking a slow troll and breathing in the clean, pine-scented Atlantic air is the order of the day here.
Start in the village of Figueira, follow a rough track for 20 to 30 minutes and emerge into paradise.
This beach, long, wide, sandy clean and breathtakingly beautiful is set against the romantic backdrop of the ruins of an old, abandoned sea fort.
What makes this beach so special however is the seclusion. The fact it cannot be reached by car added to the fact the only approach is the relatively long walk down the rough, country path means this is one of the least visited beaches.
So if you’re very lucky you may find you have the whole thing to yourself - your own personal slice of paradise.
