Should I Use Place Cards At My Reception?

I am often ask about the difference between seating cards and place cards. So, here is a simple explanation:
Seating cards or Escort cards will tell your guests which table they are seated at and place cards will tell them which place at the table is theirs.
Some couples like to allow their guest to chose their own seat at the table. This is perfectly fine, but it can become confusing for your guest. For example you may have a table for 10 and depending on when each guest arrives, they may not end up sitting together. They may be forced to separte and sit next to someone they do not know.
Also if you are allowing your guest to choose their entree, the catering staff will really appreciate it if they know exactly where each guest will be sitting.
Place cards can be placed on a napkin or above the charger or plate. Or you can combine a place card with another detail, such as the menu card or favor.
