Rubondo Island is made up of one main island and eleven smaller islands in Northwest Tanzania. About 80% of the main island is covered by completely unspoilt, pristine forest which is a paradise habitat for various shy wild creatures that conceal themselves within the shadows of the lush ancient trees.

There is a very small human population on Rubondo Island – just a few park rangers, wildlife rangers and camp staff so you can sit back and relax in complete serenity. The hunter-gatherer cultural history of Rubondo Island very much lives on within the landscapes of the lush savannah and thick woodland.

What to Do?

Rubondo Island offers superb and adventurous forest and water-based activities, from chimpanzee scouting, excellent bird viewing and game drives through the dense forest.

Nature seekers can blissfully discover virgin flora and fauna. From the vervet monkey to elephants and giraffes, you can expect to see crocodiles and hippos in shallow waters, as well as about 40 wild chimpanzees. With birdlife of over 200 endemic and migratory species, wildflowers (especially wild orchids), butterflies, otters, frogs and the secretive sitatunga antelope that rest in papyrus swamps, Rubondo Island is nothing short of nature lovers paradise.

A bird lover’s dream hideout, a boat trip around the island also offers the opportunity to experience the rich birdlife as well as game watching.

The Nile perch is a famous spot for guests to enjoy game fishing. In fact, the largest fish caught in this area weighed a whopping 105kg!
