For brides and bridesmaids alterations are a must! It can get pretty costly hemming an inch off your dress if you don't do the research before purchasing a gown. I recently read an article in Real Simple that gave a few tips & tricks on how to save on alterations and just had to share.
I wish I knew this beforehand to share to some of my bridesmaids. What most people don't know is, that while David's Bridal is pretty inexpensive to buy a dress. . . their alterations are pretty outrageous in price. To hem a dress a small amount was over $45.00. While that may not seem a lot, if you do your research you can cut the cost in half.
Here are some tips on how to save. . .
1. Give your seamstress at least two weeks to work. Most people wait until the last minute to get alterations done and you can save about 20% by bringing it in early.
2. You can negotiate up to 25% off if you get alterations done during their slowest months, in order, January, February, and August.
3. Bring your gown/dress to a tailor you normally get alterations. They will most likely give you a much bigger discount than getting it done from the place your purchased your dress.
4. When purchasing from a department store or boutique make sure to ask if they provide alterations for free. Most will provide a complimentary alterations if the dress is purchased from there.
So I hope this was helpful information! Do your research ladies saving $20-$50 can add up :)
