Reconstructive Surgery Options After Breast Cancer Treatment

Breast cancer is the number one cancer among women. The National Cancer Institute estimated that, in 2010, there were 207,090 patients diagnosed and almost 40,000 deaths that resulted from breast cancer. Fortunately, the 5 year survival rate for breast cancer is 98% when detected early and confined to the breast.

Being a woman, it’s important to know both your treatment and reconstructive options. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Breast Surgeons are now urging new patients and their physicians to insist that their treatment be handled by a team of healthcare professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and management of breast cancer.

If diagnosed with breast cancer, you should be aware of your treatment options. Some breast tumors can be managed with a partial removal of the breast tissue, or lumpectomy. This procedure spares the non- diseased breast tissue and can preserve breast contour and sensation. However, a mastectomy, or complete removal of the breast, is still indicated in many clinical situations. Only an experienced breast surgeon, or oncologist can advise you on which is the best procedure in your particular situation.

Women who are facing the potential for the loss of one, or both of their breasts due to breast cancer are often scared, depressed and need emotional support. Plastic surgeons that specialize in breast reconstruction are part of the team of physicians who manage these problems. If you need a mastectomy, ask your doctors to refer you to a plastic surgeon and discuss your options for breast reconstruction. Most reconstructive procedures are done on the same day of the mastectomy. There has been much progress made in the last 10 years. You should learn about these operations whether using implants or your own lower abdominal tissue. Only an experienced plastic surgeon can help you decide on the best reconstructive procedure for you.

Make sure that you have the facts. Breast cancer reconstruction should not delay or affect the treatment of your breast cancer, whether you need chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Recurrence or relapse rates are not any higher in women who have had reconstruction.

The Peer Group’s Dr. Francisco G. Colón and Dr. Isaac Starker are Board Certified Plastic Surgeons who are experienced in breast reconstruction. They are both available to answer questions about reconstructive surgery. If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, remember that you are not alone. There are safe and effective reconstructive procedures that can restore a natural breast shape and contour.
