This is always my favorite part of the day so I thought it would be a great place to start. The nerves and excitement always make for good photography.
Allow Enough Time
Many brides I encounter book the photographer to stay through the end of the reception and shave off “Getting Ready” coverage. I always recommend the opposite. Photography is one of the few wedding items you’ll purchase that will stay with you forever. Your father seeing you in your dress for the first time, your last hug as a single woman with your bridesmaids, seeing long distance friends for the first time in years – these are all really special moments that will mean a lot to you in years to come. Make sure you have someone there to capture them all.
Decorate the Bride's Dressing Room
This usually is overlooked in the planning/decorating phase. However, the day starts in the bridal suite. Many important moments are captured there. Flowers, signs and other small touches will help the “Getting Ready” images reflect the same carefully crafted style you've created for the ceremony and reception.
Remove the Clutter
Even if you decide against elaborate décor for your bridal suite – remember to remove the clutter. Water bottles, snack bags, plastic wrap, napkins, etc. – while necessary – do not belong in your wedding album. Consider having designated areas for luggage and food. If you communicate this to your bridal party beforehand, they can make sure the main area stays clear for your images.
Don't Forget the Light
Finally, consider the light. The key to any good photograph is light. Window light will not only give a warm romantic glow to your images but also allow your makeup artist to apply your makeup most naturally.
