Emmy and Raul’s story began back in 2008 when they met in college. They were in the same Business program, the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, and had several classes together. At that time, Emmy had no clue that Raul was interested in her, and Raul knew that Emmy was unavailable.
It wasn't until after graduation that the couple-to-be tested the dating waters. For Emmy, an important – if not required – characteristic of a date is that he must have good dancing skills. As it turned out, Raul did not fail to impress, as his dancing skills – and other attributes – helped him win Emmy over. It wasn't long after their first few dates that they knew they were meant for one another.
In the summer of 2012, Emmy and Raul decided to vacation in Hawaii after attending a wedding in California. To Emmy, the decision to fly out to the rainbow state was a spontaneous yet exciting decision. For Raul, the trip to the islands was part of a carefully crafted plan.
One evening, on their way to dinner, Raul asked Emmy to stop to take pictures on a beautiful white-sand beach. Emmy was reluctant to go anywhere near the sand in her maxi dress, afraid that she would be a mess after a few shots (she is so girly!). After some negotiation, they ended up taking pictures on the concrete walkway, near the shore.
As Emmy was looking around for a flower to place in her hair, she noticed what seemed to be a jewelry box in the shape of a seashell. She immediately picked it up and told Raul, "I think somebody dropped their jewelry box." She struggled to get it open, with Raul eventually helping her out. After managing to pry the seashell open, Emmy's eyes opened wide, as she exclaimed, "Omg, someone's engagement ring! We have to turn this in to the front desk, some couple is probably freaking out!"
In response, Raul looked into Emmy’s eyes said, "It’s yours." He bent down on one knee, and presented the ring to Emmy. Caught in the moment, neither Emmy nor Raul can recall the exact words that were spoken, only the emotions that filled them both as she answered, "yes."
Looking back, Emmy’s comments about the seemingly wayward ring are hilarious. In her defense, they were in Hawaii, where couples get married and engaged all the time! Adding to the sense of surprise, Emmy was not expecting to get engaged, as Raul had already given her the talk about not being quite ready to get married.
Kudos to our groom for surprising his love with such a fantastic engagement!
Bodamaestra is extremely happy to be part of Emmy and Raul’s big upcoming wedding event on June 28 in Bethesda, MD.
Happy planning!
