I met with a lovely couple this week who are busy planning a January wedding. Amongst the discussions the bride-to-be mentioned a cultural tradition of the groom delivering gifts to the bride on the wedding morning.
For me, this was a special and unique inclusion to a wedding day, but to the couple it was a "old hat" and "traditional" and they were looking to breakfree of the cultural norm.
The cogs in my brain then started turning, and I had this revelation.
In order to make our wedding ceremonies unique or unusual we shouldn't just be turning to youtube, but also overseas. Adopting wedding traditions from other cultures and countries could just be the standout moment of your own wedding.
For example, in China the Bride would be carried to the Groom's house while in Hungary the family, or indeed the town, walk the bride from her house to the Church or Groom's house.
In traditional Orthodox Russia marrying couples are crowned as royalty for the day. The bride and groom must stand on a special carpet as they recite their marriage vows, but first they race each other to it. Whoever reaches the carpet first will, presumably, be the head of the household.
If that was the case, I'd be in training for weeks beforehand!
Whether it be plate smashing or going into seclusion prior to the wedding, think outside the box and outside OZ for inspiration.
