• The name Le Kremlin-Bicetre is actually a mixture of French, Russian, and Italian. The commune was originally a small hamlet known as Bicetre. It was then part of Gentilly. Bicetre was the manor of the Bishop of Winchester, John of Pontoise. In the 13^th century it was called as Vinchestre, which eventually became Bicetre.
• The town is best known for the Bicetre Hospital, which was built on the ruins of the manor several centuries later. It became a major receiving point for the Grande Armee’s evacuated casualties. Veterans of the Russian invasion used to gather near the hospital, and the tavern was renamed as The Kremlin Sergeant.
• The names Kremlin and Bicetre were merged in the late 19^th century, and the name is still used up to the present.
