When you put on your bling, do you ever wonder if the diamonds you wear is real? Was that ‘great deal’ you got was a little bit too good? How can you be sure you’ve got the real thing?
The fact of the matter is, you do not need to be a professional jeweller or a diamond expert for you to know if your jewellery is made of real or fake diamonds. Through three simple tests, you are able to test for yourself.
If you are curious, then this article will help you test your jewellery and diamonds to see it is real or fake.
The Fog Test
The Fog test says its all in it’s name. Simply take the stone you are suspicious of and breath onto it, fogging it like a mirror.
What happens next would determine whether your diamond is real or fake. This is due to how diamonds are created, through intense heat and pressure. Fake diamonds would stay fogged up for a few seconds, while real diamonds would quickly disperse the heat of your breath instantly.
The Sinking Test
Another simple test that you can conduct by yourself but is ideal for loose diamonds rather than stones on jewellery. This is because you are testing whether your diamonds would float or not.
With a glass of water, drop the loose diamonds into the water and observe. Diamonds and other precious stones, being stones, should sink directly down to the bottom of the glass. There would be no delay while fake diamonds would float and linger.
The Sparkle Test
The sparkle is one of the big reasons why people are attracted to its beauty and charm. It can also be the key to telling whether your diamond is real or fake.
Take the stone or jewel in question and shine a light directly at a diamond. This could be the light from a torch or the flashlight from your phone. With the light shining at the stone, how does it sparkle? Does it sparkle gray or while? Does the diamond in question reflect a rainbow of colour onto other surfaces?
What are you looking for is the ‘Brilliance’ or ‘Brilliant’, that grey or white light around and outside your diamond. That is dispersed light, also known as ‘fire’, It would reflect a rainbow of colours onto other surfaces.
However, if your diamond has a rainbow of colours in the centre of the diamond, it is most likely a fake. Real diamonds refract that rainbow onto other surfaces, unlike fake diamonds.
While these are three simple tests that you can perform at home, if you find yourself with any doubt over the pedigree of your diamonds, the best course of action is to take them to your trusted jeweller to confirm whether or not they’re real or fake.
