How to Set Up an Icing/Piping Bag for Cake Decorating (for large tips)
Step 2: Cut the tip of the bag, so that when you drop the tip inside the bag a small portion of it protrudes through the opening. No more than half of the tip should be coming out of the bag.
Note: It is better to cut too little off than too much. You can readjust and cut a little more off if the tip is barely peeking through the hole.
How to Set Up an Icing/Piping Bag for Cake Decorating (for regular tips)
Step1: Gather Supplies
Step 2: Grab the coupler piece and separate it into two pieces. The larger male piece will be dropped into the bag after it has been cut. The smaller female piece will used later.
Step 3: Cut the tip of the bag. Drop the larger coupler piece into the bag so the tip is protruding slightly.
Note: I like to make sure it is firmly set in so I push it into place with my finger.
Step 4: Once the coupler piece is secure in the bag take your tip and slip it over the coupler piece on the outside of the bag. Then grab the female coupler piece and slide it on top of both and securely screw it into place.
Note: Don’t exceed more than a cup of frosting at a time in the bag. Sometimes the added pressure from more can force it through the tip quicker.
Also,I find it easier to fold the bag almost inside out to put the icing in, rather than putting it in at the top and trying to shake it down. Once you have the icing you want in it fold it back to its upright position.
