Destination weddings are extremely exciting, yet they also come with an element of risk in terms of your luggage. You are likely to have significant amounts of luggage full of outfits, favours, honeymoon clothes and so much more, so it is important to be organised to make sure you have enough space, don’t lose anything and don’t spend more on baggage fees than your actual wedding! Here are a few things you can do to make the process easy.
Start A Checklist Months Before
It is never too early to start a checklist when it comes to your wedding. Things are likely to pop into your head as you get closer to the wedding, so start a list in a notepad you carry with you or on your phone. You should write down everything, even something small like your toothbrush that you would never usually forget, as you will have a million things to be thinking about. Also, check your passports six months before you travel to prevent any last minute panicking.
If you have space, it is also a good idea to start packing things when you can. Use a spare room or space you don’t use everyday to keep a few suitcases and simply pack things that you don't need before you leave. This will take the stress out of buying something and then forgetting where you had put it. Your ‘wedding area’ might take up lots of space for a few weeks, but it will make your life much easier when it comes to packing properly.
Avoid Checking In Anything For The Big Day
No matter how long before the wedding you are travelling to the destination, avoid checking in anything you will need for the big day. Most other things can be replaced, but it is essential that you take the important things for your wedding onto the plane with you as carry-on luggage. These include wedding rings, dress and tux, shoes, guest books etc. No matter what else happens, you will have your outfits and rings for the big day and the wedding can go ahead.
Avoid Shipping - Pack Everything!
Rather than boxing up things like wedding favours and decorations, pack them all and check them in rather than shipping them to the destination in advance. Packages get lost so often, especially when travelling long distances, so it simply isn’t worth taking the risk even if it is the cheaper option.
Just choose favours that can’t break easily and pack them in a large suitcase. Although there is always a risk of luggage getting lost, it is less common that packages going missing. It might be a pain having an extra case to carry, but it will be worth it.
Have A Separate Suitcase For All Liquids
When you usually go on holiday, you might double bag your toiletries and liquids to go into the case with the rest of your clothes, yet this isn’t a risk you should take for your wedding. If you need to, keep your liquids in a case with more casual clothes like your plain tracksuits, pyjamas or swimwear to make sure that nothing important gets damaged. The last thing you want is a sun cream covered suit!
Make Use Of An Old Suitcase You Can Leave Behind
It is a given that your luggage costs on the way out to the wedding will be expensive. Yet, you can save costs on the way back as you won’t be taking the favours or decorations back with you that you needed on the way out. So, use an old suitcase or two that you can leave behind at the destination to save significant amounts of money on your return journey.
If this isn’t an option, kindly ask close family and friends if they would mind taking a small carrier bag with a few favours in. This is another money saving option, but if you feel better knowing everything has been packed by you, then a spare suitcase is better.
