The Skill

First things first: if you’re hiring someone to do your makeup on your wedding day, you need to hire someone who can do a great job with your makeup. Check out the artist’s website or portfolio to see the kind of work they typically do. If it’s something you like, ask if he or she will do a trial run. Have the artist do your makeup exactly as they would on the big day, and see how you feel about the results. If you love it, great! If you don’t, don’t be afraid to say no. After all, this is your special day, and you deserve to feel beautiful.

The Personality

Whether you believe it or not, the morning of your wedding day is going to be a stressful one. You will be a ball of nerves. Your bridesmaids will be rushing around making sure everything is perfect. The venue will be electric with nervous and excited energy. You know what you don’t need in this situation? If you know someone who is a makeup artists, or even just has exceptional skill, they may ask you if they can do your makeup for the wedding. Having a friend do the makeup is certainly an option - it happens all the time! But here’s the thing: you should feel confident that your makeup will be done and it will be done well. Also, a professional will have the right makeup tools to avoid infections or other eye diseases. If you know for a fact that your friend struggles to get places on time, maybe don’t trust her with your look on your big day. There’s no reason to feel guilty about it: weddings are a big deal, and doing work for them requires a level of professionalism.

The Budget

Even before you begin your search for your makeup artist, you need to take some time to decide on your budget. As we mentioned before, some artists can get expensive - particularly if you have a large wedding party. Do a little research early on and decide what you’re willing to spend. This way, you aren’t blindsided with the dollar signs after you fall in love with a particular artist! And remember, you don’t always have to spend big to look beautiful. With the right artist, you can achieve a bridal look that will be as memorable for your guests as the wedding will be for you.
