When you’re planning your wedding, choosing your wedding dress is an incredibly important and exciting decision. This dress will probably be the most luxurious and spectacular dress you will ever wear, so it’s important that you choose something that you are completely in love with.

There are lots of different things to think about when you’re choosing your Indian wedding dress, so let us give you a hand with a quick guide to help you decide.

Type of Dress

With countless different traditions and cultures within India, comes a number of different types of wedding dress, each one with its own story.

Saree

The saree or sari is a particularly beautiful traditional option for a wedding. Offering an incredibly feminine silhouette, while using bright colours and luxurious embellishments to create a stunning wedding look.

Lehenga Choli

Popular in North India, the lehenga choli features a cropped bodice and a skirt which are often brightly coloured with jewels and embellished patterns covering the design. This is often paired with a matching dupatta, completing this beautiful outfit.

Western-Inspired

Many brides who have Indian and western roots will choose to bring the two worlds together in their wedding dress, choosing something which clearly has influences from both traditions, creating something truly unique.

This gown from Sonas Couture is a perfect example of a dress which combines both traditions.

Colour

Colour is a huge feature of Indian weddings so it makes sense that the bride’s attire should be just as colourful as the other elements of the celebration. In Indian culture, red is a colour often associated with weddings so is a perfect choice for a wedding dress. The colour is thought to represent passion and romance so lends itself to this romantic occasion.

However, red is not the only colour that Indian brides choose for their special day. In fact, you can choose just about any colour to feature in your wedding dress, from deep greens to sparkling golds.

Embellishments

Most Indian wedding dresses feature beautiful and intricate embellishments which give the garment a real sense of luxury and opulence. These often include embroidery, beading, sequins and other details. These seemingly small details can often be particularly important to brides as they create a wedding look which is feminine, delicate and unique.

How to Choose Your Dress

There are countless things that you will need to consider when it comes to choosing your wedding dress, including everything from your culture and traditions to the colour palette of your wedding.

You may want to get the opinion of family and friends when you are choosing your dress. Perhaps you can take your mother and bridesmaids with you when you go looking for your wedding dress. However, while their opinion can be helpful in your decision making, the most important thing is that you love the dress. Remember that this is your special day, and as long as you are comfortable and feel amazing in your dress, it doesn’t matter if it’s not what someone else would choose!
