How Sweet: Wedding Dessert Bar Ideas

Weddings are a celebration where people just love to indulge; thus the great music, good food, and flowing wine. While buffets have always been a hit with the guests, they have become somewhat commonplace and not too exciting. And since weddings are all about that creating that special, once-in-a-lifetime feeling, a lot of wedding organizers and couples have decided to up the ante with dessert bars. Yeah, we know dessert bars aren’t exactly a once-in-a-lifetime thing since they are so popular these days. Nevertheless, the sight of one instantly makes guests feel that hey, this is no ordinary day.

Dessert buffets are indulgent and just plain joyful. As I mentioned earlier, they are pretty popular these days. There are dessert buffets on birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, anniversaries, and more. So to make them memorable for your wedding, take cues from these couple who’ve done it. Remember: love is sweet and so should be your buffet table.

To save yourself (and your caterer) time from whipping up complicated desserts, why not set up a cookie bar? You can go crazy with all the different kinds of Oreo in the world or serve old-school favorites like choco chip cookies, gingerbread cookies, and other well-loved recipes from home. No matter what you choose, don’t forget the milk.

Complete your fall wedding’s rustic feel with fruity desserts that show the actual fruit. Fruit tarts, glazed fruits ... you get the idea. Apart from these goodies being absolutely delicious, they earn plus points for being decorative.

What can be more comforting at a country wedding than pie? The answer is... nothing.

There’s no reason why you can’t have your favorite form of carbs and sugar on your wedding day: donuts can belong to weddings when you dress them up.

This might sound a little lazy, but you are having trouble finding a theme for your dessert bar, remember that chocolate will not fail you.

And if it is in the middle of winter, why not make it a hot choco bar?

And so is color-coding your desserts. Pastel-colored macarons with matching floral cupcakes look fabulous (and taste great too!).

Another wise thing to remember is that there is no rule against having more than one cake.

A couple more tips!
Think of a theme
You don’t want your buffet table to look like your mother’s kitchen countertop on Thanksgiving (not that there’s anything wrong with your mom’s baking and if her baking is actually fabulous, you could make that your theme).  Choose a theme for your choice of desserts not only for aesthetic appeal but the actual taste as well. You don’t imagine pecan pies going well with macarons, do you?

Want to keep it homey? Go for pies and fudge (Mom’s recipes!). Want a little more fancy? Tiny slices of chocolate mousse, chocolate-covered strawberries, and creme brulee in small portions. Run your options through with your caterer, they know food best.

Keep them bite-sized
To keep the table from getting messy, keep your desserts bite-sized. This way guests won’t have to cut through cakes, pies, and whatnot. Of course, you could consider having someone watch the table but make sure that whoever you choose won’t cast judging looks on guests who have come around a third time. We’re kidding of course. With a busy wedding, we’re doubtful you could spare one more body for this task.

What kind of dessert did you serve at your reception? What would you serve?
