Club owners in the Entertainment District have been working on it for decades. Yet what is cool one year, becomes tired the next. So what makes a club good?
The answers are not surprising, however, this kind of insight can lead to an interesting perspective when planning a wedding or event of your own. According to the people I asked there are three main answers - in varying order but most commonly in the following order:
Music was most often the most important, with atmosphere and people as also very important. Other answers range from drink specials, location, VIP access etc. If you're planning your own wedding or using an event planner consider this perspective along with your overall vision for your event.
I'm certainly not suggesting that music must be considered the most important thing at a wedding. The venue & atmosphere/ambience are hugely important at a wedding, and they rightly represent a massive chuck of any wedding budget. Venue & location, lighting, pipe and drape, centre pieces, color themes, are all critical considerations. All combined, they are meant to dazzle your guests and to provide a spectacular backdrop for your day.
It is worth considering that if music is the most important thing when people are deciding where to spend there time on a Saturday night then its fair to say it is also really important at a wedding where the hosts aspire to "throw a great party" as well. It's certainly worth keeping music in mind or even including music providers in the early stages of designing an event. After all, the wrong DJ or band can actually ruin even the most beautifully designed wedding.
If you are planning to throw a great party and envision your guests dancing and fist-pumping late into the night it is totally OK to perceive music & entertainment as more critical to a successful celebration then some aesthetic considerations.
Consider these wedding statistics:
*These statistics were published in St. Louis Bride & Groom Magazine in 2003. Sources include: Simmons, 2001; USA Today, 2002; National Bridal Service, 2001; The Knot, 2002; Brides Magazine, 2001.
Decide how important entertainment should be at your wedding or event, and plan accordingly. Hire a great DJ or amazing live band. Or why not have both a DJ and a live band at your wedding?

Happy planning!
