You can’t fool yourself and say that wedding planning is not stressful. You have a cake to pick out, dresses to see, appointments to make, and of course finding that perfect wedding photographer to compliment your big day. But just like every other wedding service, there are so many questions to ask. Where do you begin? Which ones are the most important? As a wedding photographer myself, I know that you might not be able to think of everything. But there are key things you should ask every possible photographer that might shoot your big day!
1. Are you comfortable with providing direction?
I placed this question first because this is one of the most important ones. A photographer who is taking pictures on your big day, should be confident in providing direction not only to the bridal party, but to others as well such as the wedding direction, family members, and even guests. From the moment you wake up till the moment to the moment you drive away into the sunset, everything will move so fast it will all be one big blur. So what does this mean? It means that the person taking your pictures needs to be able to manage a hectic schedule, understand what is going on, and provide great direction to make happen what needs to happen.
2. Are you familiar with different wedding styles?
Not every bride is the same. If they were, there would no uniqueness or personality in weddings. This being said, there are many different styles of weddings that can take place. For example you might have a traditional or modern wedding. Your photographer needs to be able to adapt to meet your needs. Do you want traditional formal poses in the church? Or do you want something different and modern and a neat location? No matter what, a solid wedding photographer needs to be able to accomodate.
3. Do you have an online proofing?
This is almost a given with any photographer these days but it still does not hurt to ask. While most professional photographers provide an online proofing gallery, some still do not. This will only make things easier for you. You can go online and see your proofs at any given time. Another benefit to online proofing is that in most cases you can order prints right there from the gallery. A must have service for brides.
4. What is your turn around time?
This one can be a trick question. While most brides are anxious to see those pictures the moment they get back from their honeymoon, it does not mean its a good idea to have a photographer that turns around photos in a few days. Personally, my standard turn around time is about 4 weeks. I would much rather take extra time and know I did the best job processing each photo that I possibly can. Sometimes its good to know that they are taking longer to do a better job. All in all, you want what is best for you. Not saying this should happen, but if someone says about 8 weeks, that might be pushing your time frame just a little bit.
5. Do you use an assistant?
As I stated in the first question. Wedding days are hectic. There is a lot of work to be done by the photographer. With that being said it is almost unrealistic for a photographer not to have help. Whether it is a second shooter taking more pictures, or someone to help keep the photographer on schedule and carry his gear. Any type of help will allow the photographer to stay focused and stay on task. Be weary of photographers will attempt to shoot many hours solo.
So when meeting up with a photographer to talk about them potentially shooting your wedding, do not be afraid to ask questions. They should be open, honest, and be able to relate with you. If they cannot answer these questions, or choose not to, they are not the photographer for you.
Congratulations and good luck to planning your big day.
