Gyro scooter or segway - what to choose?

Today there will be a review article in which I will talk about segways and gyro scooters, their differences, pros, and cons.

In fact, these devices are the same in the principle of operation, the main difference is that the segway, invented in the first place, has the steering wheel for convenient control. The hoverboard, or mini-segway, does not have a rudder and is controlled by feet.

To determine the position in space, a system of gyroscopic sensors (gyroscope) is used, thanks to which the controller precisely adjusts the position of the wheels, allowing you to move - accelerate, brake, turn - and not fall.

By the way, at the end of the article, I will give a video where something that always causes laughter happens - falls from segways and gyro scooters.

Segway and hoverboard - what's the difference?

In fact, these are "close relatives", so it is more logical to start comparing them with differences. Segway is a small platform with a long handle. There are only two wheels, so the driver has to balance to maintain balance, holding on to the handle. Balancing in motion is even more difficult than on the spot, so the control devices placed on the handle are very helpful. In fact, this long handle is a kind of steering wheel, only the driver is standing all the time, and not sitting like in a car. Segway is vaguely similar to a scooter, only it moves with a motor and the wheels are installed in parallel, not in series.

An important point: maintaining balance on such a vehicle is greatly facilitated by the built-in gyroscopes. But the mechanics of movement are very different from the scooter - before going to the city, you need to practice until the basic minimum of movements is mastered to automatism, at the level of reflexes. Even if the owner is already an adult and in childhood/adolescence did not ride on anything two-wheeled, it is quite possible to master such a "transport of the future" in a few days.

Riding a segway can cause injury and even death. Here is the most striking example

However, riding a motorcycle is much more dangerous and requires more skill and responsibility!

It is better to try a hoverboard after a segway because the platform area is even smaller - just put your legs. And there is no handle at all, there is nothing to hold on to. And the wheels are much smaller, which narrows the space for comfortable movement. On the other hand, the segway weighs a lot, it needs to be parked, and you can take the gyro scooter with you in your bag and check it in your luggage on trips.

Technical differences and their consequences

Let's move on from design features to technical parameters. The power of the motor-wheel of the segway is obviously higher - simply because there is more space for the engine. And this space is actively used. A decent wheel diameter allows you not to be limited to a flat floor or smooth asphalt, but also to overcome low obstacles, from thresholds to curbs, without any problems.

The currently available range of hoverboard wheel sizes is 6.5 to 10 inches. There are inflated models, with a smooth ride and good ground clearance, but this is for segways or hoverboards, the most advanced models, which are catching up with subcompact cars in cost. That is why manufacturers have already turned their backs on the original segway layout - the exotic remained unclaimed.

But the gyro scooter in the "no-frills segway" version, compact and relatively inexpensive, is gradually gaining more and more fans. By the way, in everyday life, the names of mini-segway and gyrocycle are common - this is the gyro scooter.

Have to take the subway every weekday? Does the office work require regular use of the elevator? This is where the owner will appreciate the compactness and lightweight of the hoverboard. Moreover, a parking space or a free corner, even a separate locker is not needed - you can take a "personal taxi driver" with you directly to the workplace, put it on a shelf or under a table. Doesn't bother anyone and is always there.

What can you ride in a crowd? What can you use to turn around among pedestrians? A hoverboard will give odds to any bike - it turns around its axis, literally on the spot. Going to the nearest cafe for lunch at rush hour is no problem.

How to choose a segway or gyro scooter?

The main criterion is where it is supposed to be driven. This means both the presence of obstacles on the way and the distance. To travel nearby and carry your transport with you during the day, a hoverboard is ideal. It is not necessary to additionally buy a special carrier - any sufficiently capacious bag or backpack will do. The manufacturers of this mini-transport produce covers - the most convenient option.

The big minus of gyro scooters is the carrying capacity. More precisely, there is simply no place for the cargo. You can freely stand on the segway and put a bag next to it, and it is better not to ride a hoverboard to the supermarket. But if the family has a car, or the owner of the hoverboard lives alone and does not make large purchases, then the problem is limited to the choice of transport.

The most rational choice is to analyze your trips and determine where to ride comfortably. As practice shows, a gyro scooter perfectly fulfills its functions in a city with well-groomed roads, for regular trips to work or study.

Features of control of a segway or gyro scooter

The most important thing when starting to use these devices is not to make sudden movements! Everything is the same as with a motorcycle and a bicycle - we learn to drive slowly and smoothly, and then we gain mastery.

This electric vehicle appeared in the era of gadgets, so the instructions for it are very reminiscent of an anecdote about an "intuitive interface". In theory, everything is simple, thanks to the built-in gyroscopes: in which direction you need to go - there the driver leans. In fact, it does not work right away, since the speed is low - up to 20 km / h. A typical segway is capable of withstanding a load of 130 kg or more - quite enough for personal transport.

The maximum load of a gyro scooter is about the same, only it weighs several times less - about 10 kg. The difference in cost is almost proportional to the weight: a hoverboard is about 4-5 times cheaper. And it accelerates to 15 km / h maximum. The distance on a single battery charge also differs in multiples: 40 (segway) and 20 (hoverboard) km.

One must always remember the likelihood of battery discharge. If the battery in the hoverboard runs out, you can take it with you in your bag, but the segway will add to the hassle. It is not difficult to master both options, this is largely determined by addiction, but the Segway has a steering wheel, so much dexterity is not needed - an actual moment for people with disabilities and the elderly. And although their carrying capacity is close, tall and overweight people are clearly more comfortable with a segway.

Do you often maneuver among pedestrians? The hoverboard is beyond competition, it will come in handy even in the studio or in the office. And if the owner is a fan of tricks - even more so. There is not much extreme, the speed is reasonable - it will not be dangerous.

Segway or Segway - which is correct?

In fact, these words come from the English "segway" and hoverboards, so it is more correct to say "SegWay". However, the spelling "SigWay" is much more common in everyday life.

In general, while it is possible and so and so. In the article I mainly use the spelling with the letter "I", so it's more pleasant to listen to. But what to talk about, even if sellers write both options at the same time:
