Geek Ever After is Running the LA Marathon for Charity!

Hello all! Peter and I are participating in The LA Marathon I Run for Something Campaign. While we take on the 26.2 miles of the lovely City of Angels, our participation will benefit one of many awesome charities. So stayed tuned as we will announce the charity of our choice Nov. 23rd. This will be Peter’s first marathon and my second. He jokes that he will crawl across the finish line, but he’ll be just fine.

Also, for those  of you who are getting hitched in 2012 and want to start your lives together as a happily healthy couple, getting ready for a 5k, half or full marathon is a great way to get yourself off the couch and into some good running shoes. Don’t think for a second about doing some silly crash diet days before. It’s extremely unhealthy and just adds more stress to what should be a happy occasion. Dropping some pounds before the big day for the pics is fine and dandy, but the overall health of yourself and loved one is very important.

Starting today until March 18th, we’ll  post how our training is going once a week. While some weight loss is part of my goal, I truly want to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and incorporate more physical activity into my daily routine. For Peter, it’s to cut back on cigarettes and get back into being more physically active (because taking cigarette breaks during a marathon is just no good).

I had a bad scare about 2 months ago when my blood pressured spiked and I was beyond ill with one of the worst migraines I’ve ever had. Cut a few days later, the doctor tells me that due to my family history of having damn near everything wrong with us health wise, I was tipping into the beginning stages of hypertension (It’s here that I should mention that I just turned 26 this past October. Any health issues that you catch early on should be taken seriously and dealt with). This fiasco and the medication that goes along with any blood pressure irregularity can be completely avoided with a change of diet and regular exercise.  With Peter, it’s about cutting down on certain vices as we get older (like beer, over nighters, or playing Rome Total War until 5 in the morning).

So, we’ll keep you posted on how we are holding up. As, I get a second chance to run the marathon without the downpour of rain (hopefully) and Peter finds out how awesome mile 18 is, we hope that us sharing our little venture will get some folks off the couch and away from the crash diets.  And while you’re at it, sign up for the LA Marathon!
