We see it all the time, the dreaded cobra flash. If you do not understand how to use a flash then you are in need of teaching.

A flash should always be used ETTL mode when on the camera. The shutter speed and ISO will control your natural light and you aperture will control your flash power, this is for off camera flash. When using the flash mounted on your camera, leave it to ETTL and shoot away. You need to insure that your lightmeter is balance between -1/3 to 1/3 of a stop and you shall see the magic happen. If you shoot with your lightmeter greatly underexposed, you not get the natural light to come in your picture and it will give you a very dark or black background. There are plenty of diffusers or else in this world but you shouldn't buy any. The normal flash can give some great quality light when used properly.

In this picture, I am shooting an image at 1/100 of a second at an aperture of 1.6 and ISO 1000. My settings give me the natural light from the room (the orange and red light behind him). My flash which is bounced on a wall about 90 feet away gives me a nice soft light on the left side of the image. I know this sounds crazy, but just try it with an orange at home ( this is your homework :P)
