Black tuxedos, white wedding gowns, and the whole three and three usher/bridesmaid set-up may be the traditional way to have a wedding ceremony, but it’s definitely not the only way, or even the most popular way anymore. If you’re planning on getting married there’s no reason you have to conform to what is perceived to be “society’s standards”. Dare to be different when you plan your wedding. How about a purple tuxedo and a pink wedding dress? What about shorts and t-shirts on the beach? Both have been done. The most important element, the love and commitment to each other is there. What difference does it make what you wear.
The same rules apply to venue. Songs and sayings like “Get me to the Church on Time” and “White Wedding” reflect the traditions and times of when they were written. When selecting a venue today there’s no need to get caught up in nostalgia. Be the first to choose that lakeside beach or urban gazebo for your wedding ceremony. It’s also okay to get married in the backyard if you want to. Why not? Affordability is important in the economic climate we live in. Don’t be afraid to save a few dollars by doing an at-home ceremony and reception.
Who are you inviting to your wedding? Are you choosing to have an open bar because a few of your guests like to get smashed at family events? Doesn’t the thought of that cause you stress? Once again, don’t be a slave to tradition. If your guest is a potential problem when drinking, either don’t invite them or don’t serve alcohol. There are some great selections of non-alcoholic champagne and grape juice you can use for a toast. What do you think those in recovery from alcoholism use when they get married? You won’t see margaritas on the table there.
And then there are the wedding favors. This is the area where you can have the most fun planning a wedding that’s different from the norm. Specialty wedding favors can be found for all ideas, wedding themes, and venue selections. Looking to do the Las Vegas thing? Want to get married on a beach? Are there maybe some common elements unique to you and your chosen partner that you want to reflect in favors you give to your guests? You can buy unique wedding favors that match all of those and more. Some companies even personalize.
Dare to be different. Make your wedding one that everyone will remember for years to come. If you want to do formal black tie, by all means do it. If you want to shake things up a bit don’t be afraid to do that either. Ultimately it’s you and your partner who need to be happy at the end of the day. Of course, mother in laws can change exactly how happy you will be when the ceremony is all over and done with. For best results, make sure she’s okay with the plan too.
