At a boozy work dinner on Thursday night a girlfriend made a comment about weddings she had been to where she had felt like she was watching a play.
I had to give this some serious thought and realised that in my 30 years I had been to a few performance weddings myself. The kind of wedding where you, a guest, seem to spend ample hours standing around watching things happen.
But Kez, I have a dress to find, a celebrant to organise, invites to issue, deposits, vows and flowers your are not going to lump me with another responsibility are you?
Look, there are a few simple things you can do to make your guests feel as loved as you are on your wedding day.
Involve them
I'm taking it for granted that the people who you have invited to your wedding are actually people you like (Give or take the one or two "had to" invites). Friends, family, work mates are all part of your life together so why not involve them in your ceremony. You can do this in a number of ways. Working with your celebrant discuss the options of :-
- Blessing of the Rings / Ring Warming
- A Versicle or Answer/ Response
- Candle Ceremony
- Peace Exchange
After the ceremony is finished make sure you greet your guests before rushing off to get your shots done. They will appreciate it.
Entertain them
Off the top of my head I can think of a number of ways to entertain your guests.
- Have your MC host a round of Bride and Groom trivia (or have trivia cards on the table for guests to fill in)
- Have pictures of the Bridal party as babies on the wall and ask your guests to guess who's who.
- Run a DVD or Video of old family footage on a plasma behind the bridal table
- Set up a lounge or rest area with cards, and board games
- Give each table a challenge to complete during dinner ie Using anything on the table create a portrait of the bride and groom.
- Bring in a dance instructor or have a friend lead your guests in a master class of "Nutbush". That way everyone knows the moves before they hit the floor.
Give them a job
- If you are having a videographer get him to bring a standing camera where guests can record messages to the Bride and Groom.
- Put a disposable camera on each table and tell the guests to take plenty of photos.
- Pass round a guest book for them to sign.
Have you had an awesome time at a wedding? What did the couple do to make sure the guests were entertained? Leave your comments and suggestions
