An unexpected way to spend your honeymoon

First of all, let me congratulate you on your big day! Tying the knot is a big deal, I know!

If you are still in the process of planning, let me take up a moment of your time and discuss the honeymoon. Have you already settled on a destination? Are you going for something glam, something exotic? Or would you rather keep it low key and go someplace nearby, which will not cost you and arm and a leg.

Planning the first few weeks after your wedding can be just as stressful and important as planning the wedding itself. There are so many things to take into account, but you should bear in mind that these should be some of the best weeks of your life, so act accordingly.

If you are in the mood for something a bit more exotic, why not go on an adventure for your honeymoon? There’s no rule that says you need to be pampered and stay in bed the whole time! Why not use your time off work, which you can both take, and do something completely different?

I suggest going on a Camino de Santiago.

What is a Camino?

The Caminos are routes taken by pilgrims to the town of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. While it is a religious pilgrimage, you do not have to be religious to walk it. There are people going on Caminos for all kinds of different reasons – for adventure, to take some time off, to get to know themselves better, and ultimately, to experience something unique.

There are many routes you can choose to take, the most of them spreading through Spain, France and Portugal. They can be anywhere from a hundred to a thousand kilometers long, and you can certainly find a route that will fit with your stamina and preferences perfectly.

The Camino Frances is the most popular route, and you can run into most walkers there, so this is the road to take if you want to your first Camino to go perfectly smoothly.

Why should you go?

The two of you will be spending your entire lives together, and your honeymoon can be the perfect time to do something unique. You will be spending your time on the road, walking from scenic village to quaint town, and this is the perfect opportunity to get to know each other even better than you do now. You will not experience similar situations at home, and you will get to know what you are made of, and how you can structure your future family dynamic to suit the both of you.

You can tailor your Camino anyway you like, and stay where you’d like, especially on the Camino Frances. You can plan your very own itinerary, and have fun exploring day in and day out. Not having anyone else you know around you, but still being surrounded by fellow walkers, you will be able to rely on each other and help each other out, and start your marriage off right.

Things to keep in mind

However long a Camino you go on, you will be on the open road every day. You need to pack lightly, but accordingly. Invest in the right footwear, and proper outerwear, but don’t over-pack and try to keep things light. You do not need to take a ton of makeup with you, all you will need is each other.

You can even start training for the Camino together, and work up a stamina for the trip. Trust me, your body and health will greatly benefit from the effort you put into it, not to mention your mind and soul. You will be experiencing new scenery and new cultures every day, which you will be able to talk about for the rest of your life.

Don’t let yourself get boxed in by what you think you should be doing for your honeymoon. The choice is entirely yours, and if you want to kick your married life off with an adventure, why not do so on the Camino de Santiago? All the routes are beautiful in their own way, and walking in the open air every day will do wonders for you in the long run. Sharing such a profound experience with your significant other is the perfect foundation to build your life together on.
