Weddings are a time full of love and happiness for the couple and their families and friends too.
The day is to be remembered and will be set in the hearts and memories of loved ones. And while guests don’t always remember the music played from your big day, you most certainly will. Memories are shaped around music. Some songs mean more to you than others. Even just a set of lyrics will stand out.
So when you start planning your wedding reception, you come across many ideas such as having live music during the reception. Perhaps a jazz/swing band will keep things lively.
But, when you start researching and compare the costs of associated with hiring a band, you are left feeling a little deflated. With the caterers, flowers and honeymoon still to book and pay for, your budget for music is tight. Sound familiar?
If so, spend the next few minutes reading the below tips to help you save money on your reception:
Hiring music students–Music students often keep an eye out for opportunities to play in public places. Landing a big gig like a wedding would be a huge deal for them as it’s a chance for them to be noticed.
Facebook is a great tool to use. Search for local colleges and universities and you’ll come across a band or group looking for gigs.
Let a friend or family member perform – We all know someone who is gifted with a beautiful singing voice, or gifted with a real talent to play several instruments. Don’t be afraid to approach them. Share your ideas with your friend and by collaborating together you can come up with something special.
Hire a DJ – A DJ can help alleviate the stress of planning a playlist for your wedding. You can work with the DJ to pick specific songs to play. DJs will be able to put your mind at ease and focus on keeping your guests on the dance floor. Hiring a DJ can often be a cheaper alternative to hiring a band.
Hire a newbie musician–Instead of hiring experienced professionals, you can choose to hire a newbie musician or DJ. We all need to start somewhere, so you can always give someone else a chance to do just that. Soundcloud is where you can hear the world’s music. You can read a bio and listen to music with no strings attached. Our own website is filled with DJs - some with many years of knowledge in the industry, and some who are slowly building up their portfolio. You can read profiles, review, send messages and get free quotes to work within your budget.
Avoid music in the cocktail hour–You can easily avoid music arrangements in the cocktail hour at the wedding reception. Usually people during this time are busy socialising and talking to one another. They hardly pay attention to the music that is being played during this time. You can hire a band for after the wedding breakfast, when everyone will pay attention and looking to dance. If you still would like music to be playing gently in the background during cocktail hour, you can use an iPod or CD.
