According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 12.5 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures and nearly 5.2 reconstructive surgeries were performed in the United States in 2009.
As the number of people choosing to have plastic surgery is on the rise, it is important to be well prepared as you consider surgery. The Peer Group strongly suggests following the steps below.
1. Check credentials and choose a surgeon who is an ASPS member
• ASPS member surgeons are board certified with at least 6 years of training and experience in surgery, 3 years specifically in plastic surgery. Members only operate in accredited facilities, follow a strict code of ethics and fulfill continuing medical education requirements including patient safety. ASPS surgeons are your partner through your entire experience in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
2. Research your procedure of interest.
• Do your homework. Make sure you are aware of all of your options, benefits and associated risks of the procedure including those of anesthesia.
3. Reflect on your expectations
• Discuss your post surgical expectations with the surgeon. . Realize there are some side effects and a variable amount of recovery time for each procedure.
4. Ask questions
• Prepare a list of questions prior to your consultation. Discuss your medical history and together determine the correct treatment.
5. Communicate with existing patients.
Request to speak with some of the surgeon’s existing patients who have undergone a similar procedure to learn about their experience. Obtain referrals by peers.
Following the above steps will ensure that you are well informed as you plan to have surgery.
