So, you’ve decided to pop the question, but choosing a ring to propose with is perhaps one of the trickier and most time-consuming parts of a proposal. Making the decision to propose to your partner, no matter the length of time you have been together, is a huge commitment to your relationship and the last thing you need to be worrying about it choosing and buying a ring.

However, choosing an engagement ring is one of the most important and costly purchases you will make in your life, so feeling confident about your choice is important. Here are 3 tips to help you with the process of buying an engagement ring.

Consider Their Style

When you are choosing an engagement ring, you want to choose a style which your partner will love. To do this, one of the most important things you can do is to take into account their personal style. Take a look at their jewellery collection - are the pieces silver or gold? Do they prefer vintage or modern designs?

You could also look at the clothing they wear, as this should also give you the clues you need about what ring design and style to choose. For example, if they wear floral dresses and clothing, then an ornate halo or flower style engagement ring will be perfect. If they are relaxed about what they wear, then a big showy ring is unlikely to go down well, so choose a classic and elegant design.

You may also find that talking with your partner’s friends and family is helpful as well. Talk to the people who your fiancé-to-be is close to as you might find your partner has already discussed their preferences and desires with them.

Understand The Basics Of Diamonds

Before you buy a diamond ring, you must know the basics. Having an understanding of the cut, colour, carat and clarity will help you to make a much more educated choice on a diamond as the beauty and quality of each diamond is completely different.

Cut: you should only choose an ideal or excellent cut diamond to make sure that your diamond offers the most brilliance. The cut of a diamond is one of the biggest deciding factors when it comes to a diamond’s beauty, however, it is one which is not naturally formed so mistakes can happen which is why it is so important.

Colour: for the best sparkle, choose a diamond which is almost colourless to the naked eye, within the range G-I. All diamonds have a slight colour undertone which affects the way it sparkles, but the best quality diamonds will look clear.

Carat: We all know that sparkle and beauty matter the most when choosing an engagement ring, so focus on choosing a beautifully cut diamond rather than the biggest or most weighty. Focusing on a higher grade of diamond is far more meaningful than just the biggest.

Clarity: Diamonds are natural formations, so this means that impurities and blemishes will occur every now and then. A VS1 and VS2 clarity diamond will usually offer the best value for what you can see with the naked eye as any imperfections are usually not noticeable within this grade.

Choose The Right Metal

There are four main metal choices when it comes to picking your setting for an engagement ring: white gold, rose gold, yellow gold and platinum. Firstly, you should choose a colour which best compliments your partner’s style the best. If they favour silver jewellery over gold, then white gold is a perfect choice.

However, if they prefer a little more colour, then why not consider rose gold? In general, it is recommended that you choose white gold over platinum if you are not sure as white gold is less expensive and requires far less maintenance and upkeep than platinum. If you’re still not sure what to choose, or if you want to combine a number of different elements, then why not look at getting a bespoke engagement ring made? This way, you can create it however you would like!
