Spanning the generations at the reception

It's your day and rightfully so, you want all your friends close in age to have a great time dancing to the hits trending now, but don't ignore your older guests who will be in attendance.  Older guests tend to make their exit sooner, rather than later, so, while they are still present, accommodate them with music that will drive them to the dance floor.  As a Columbus Ohio wedding dj, I can testify that the most successful wedding receptions are those in which an effort is made to…

Take your guests preferences into consideration when planning music for your reception

RSVP cards can do more than assist you in determining a head count for your wedding and reception.  They can double to promote the dance party.  Designate a space on the card whereby your guests can request a song they would like to dance to.  This gesture sends a message to your guests that you wish to include them in a fun night of dancing by taking their music tastes into consideration.  The more encompassing you are willing to be with the music, the greater the likelihood your guests…

If you secure a DJ, ensure that your tastes will be accommodated

Seems obvious, but must be stated given the fact that rolling out the right beats is a critical fun factor at the reception and is what drives guests to the dance floor.  You do not want to observe an empty dance floor, if, for example, the Chicken Dance were to be played.  It is highly recommended you talk to your DJ about your do-not-play list.  When consulting with your DJ, discuss your favorite genres, know your guests and discuss whether or not they will be permitted to make…

Keep toasts short and to the point (prep them in advance)

Bridal toasts are an important part of every wedding reception and when those speaking plan accordingly, their prose can have a lasting impact.  It is suggested that a toast does not run too long as it can put a drag on the evening.  A good toast is based on quality, not longevity.  It is suggested that anyone who takes the mic cap their speech to a max of two minutes and withhold longer narratives for a different setting, perhaps during the rehearsal…

Electrify Your First Dance

During your first dance, you will take center stage with all eyes fixed upon you which transcends into an opportunity to "shock em" with an unexpected twist.  Picture this..... your first dance begins to Etta James "At Last" as you slowly and quietly embrace this special time together and then suddenly you bust into a fast rock number or s sexy Latin or Swing step.  Your guests will be astounded and you will have ignited the…

A Send-Off With Style

At the close of the reception, as the newlyweds, you deserve to be sent on your way with a little fanfare worthy of some spectacular Instagrams.  Once guests are riding high on a night of dancing and celebrating, plan to depart the premises in style for a fun way to close the night. Nominate some people who can help you organize your send-off which might include sparklers and some confetti, but don't limit yourself to these.  You might also suggest that guests write a secret note for the…

Seat your guests at tables that describe your personality

You just made it official, but your personalities don't have to end with the flowers.  Stage your personal style with interesting table centerpieces that describe you.  These may include books, games, hobbies, or any item/s that make you stand out.  Don't loose sight of the fact that your reception is a celebration; send a clear message to your guests that it's ok to cut loose following your formal wedding ceremony (this, of course, assumes this fits your vision for your wedding reception). …

Kick it off with gratifying escort cards

Escort cards can be a fun & cool approach for your guests to locate their tables, interact with acquaintances and acquire new friends.  This is especially effective when the bride and groom have invested thought in their guest list.  Guests should be seated with those they will get along with and a well planned seating strategy will segue to great conversation, which of course, will lend itself to a great dance party, etc...  Another tactic is to provide each guest with a question that…

A GUESTBOOK IDEA FOR THE DECADES

It has become the standard that upon arrival to the reception site, guests sign a book to represent their attendance at the reception.  At the conclusion of the reception, chances are good that these books end up on a shelf in a closet or in a box, rarely, if ever, to be revisited.  Consider ushering in a keepsake that can be displayed in your home.  How about having guests sign a unique puzzle that may be displayed on a wall in your home.  If you are a musician and play the guitar, purchase…

So You Think You Can Dance?

The idea is to spark motivation and engage your guests to participate in this most memorable event "your wedding day".  This may consist of a dance duo, group or solo performance and guests should have plenty of advanced notice to polish their act.  Guests who are on board with this opportunity may then confirm their attendance to participate and prepare to dazzle.  You may consider awarding the winner with a prize (not too extravagant) as they are your friends and relatives. This is a…
