I am looking for the pros and cons of paying to be on vendor list, please advise.

Hi Amanda,
Today I was reading a blog article about this exact topic. The blog didn't recommend paying to be on a vendor list. Personally I've never paid to be on any vendor list. Instead it would be much nicer to build personal alliances with other wedding vendors - not an easy thing to do when everyone is busy trying to get new business.
But if we were to stop and think about it for just a minute. ALL wedding vendors are advertising and marketing for the same thing - the Bride & Groom's attention. We are all spinning the same wheel over and over again. Yellowpages, magazine advertising, bridal shows, online directory advertising and the list goes on and on.
Instead we are missing one very important link - and that is that we are not creating complimentary wedding vendor alliances. Liking each other on facebook isn't enough.
Example: The jeweler who sells engagement & wedding rings could be adding value to the purchase of the rings if upon the sale the Groom to be also received an envelope full of hundreds and even thousands of dollars of coupon/gift certificates to other wedding vendors in the local area - all compliments of the Jeweler. Of course the Jeweler isn't paying a penny. The jeweler is supplied with the coupon/gift certificates for free. The Jeweler takes the credit for giving away the savings to the new customer.
The dress shop could do the same.
The florist could recommend local spa/makeup & hair salons specializing in wedding services.
Limos, DJs/Bands, Venues, etc etc - we could all be giving away each other's gift certificates. Then the Bride & Groom can check out those vendors first and decide for themselves if they want to hire or do business with them.
Brides & Grooms are 1-time customers for all of us. Wouldn't it make sense to share them with other vendors? And when the bride & groom "redeem" the coupon, the vendor would "know" exactly which advertising IS working.
I'd love to hear your opinion about this.

That is a really good idea! I love it. I've just started a stationery business and I had been thinking about other ways I could advertise to get more brides. Super, super idea
I absolutely agree with you Amanda. I own a wedding planning and floral design company and each and every time i meet with a couple, I tell them about all of the other wonderful vendors I work with. To me, that is just good business practice, just paying it forward :)
Hi Ladies!
For that venue in particular I decided against, especially since they had four pages of vendors so there really was no exclusivity they were using it as a revenue stream. So I would say look at the vendor first if they are doing volume in marketing then I guess it would be worth it if not try to build alliances with vendors and really develop some serious relationships.
