Why so many women spend thousands of dollors to buy an one time wedding dresses?

Wedding dress is one time wearing dress. Why so many brides would spend a large budget to buy or custom a wedding dress. If buy one, some simple elegant patterns are enough i think. Why? Why not choose a cheaper one or just rent?
