We were curious to see what are your thoughts on the Slide shows at the weddings. When do you think is the best time to show them...during the cocktail hour, during dinner, or just have it play throughout the entire reception?

I photographed a wedding last New Years eve and they presented the slide show while the guests were waiting to be served at the reception. It was great placement for avoiding down time.
Personally I enjoy them during the dinner portion.
For my wedding, my husband and I had so many photos of family and friends that we decided to have two slideshows. The primary one was about 5 minutes and we showed that after dinner. The other consisted of a loop of about 10 minutes which included wedding photos of our parents and relatives and photos with friends. We had this one playing throughout the night (no music) on an LCD screen, in our cocktail area, which doubled as the bar/lounge area for the rest of the evening. Anytime guests went to get a drink or to the dessert buffet, they could take a break from the dancing to look at the photos. I think cocktail hour is the best time. The guests are awaiting the bride & groom and some may not know anyone esle. So having the slide show then allows them to see & interact with others as pictures are shown.
The cocktail hour is normally the best time for this... this is when your guests are mingling and it makes for good conversation and ice breakers for the guests that dont know each other all that well. Your dinner should not have any distractions to allow for a more intimate setting and relaxed atmosphere.

Also, if you have a wedding photographer, I would see about having your slideshow for the cocktail hour... off for dinner... which during that time your photographer could get the photos from your ceremony onto a new slideshow for you since he/she wont be taking photos during the dinner anyways.... then after dinner and any speaches, have the new slideshow put up with the photos from the ceremony earlier in the day.

I think that would work out best for you, but again this is just my opinion, but I hope it makes sense and helps you to make a decision on what to do. I speak of this being a professional wedding photographer and have done this for many of my own clients and it works out very nicely!

Thank you all, your comments, ideas, and suggestions have been most helpful... We just had a wedding last weekend and the slide show was played during the cocktail, it def. was great - an awesome ice breaker.
However, we do have a wedding coming up this weekend and the couple wants to have the slideshow play during dinner, because they want to see it also, and want to see people's reactions.
So, I guess that at the end of the day, as planners/vendors, we can give our clients ideas and options, but they will make the final decision :)

We been hired to produce slide shows at weddings several times. A lot depends on if you want everyone's undivided attention to be on the slideshow. To help you figure this, you must consider the length of the slideshow and it's theme. Sometimes it's played casually in the background while people eat their first course. However, if you want to make it an event that everyone gathers around a big screen to watch uninterrupted, we recommend doing it either between the first and second course (as long as it's not more than a 15 minute slideshow). Or do it immediately after the main course. Don't wait too long into the night to show it, you will either be losing guests because they left, or be interrupting the dancing.
Hi everyone...new here. I'll be updating my profile very soon. What I usually do is bring a MacBook Pro and a 17" LCD flat panel monitor to the reception and set them up in an out-of-the way (but still accessible) location and loop the slideshow so that it plays throughout the duration of the reception. My clients love it!
I believe with so much activity during the reception, i.e., first dance, cake cutting, bridal toss, toasts, etc. a slideshow presentation would be most appropriate during the cocktail hour. It would be wonderful moment for the guests to get a glimpse of the couple while the bridal party take wedding photos, which makes guests waiting less painful.
We most often show them during the coctail hour if it is just a photo montage and at the beginning of the reception if it is a Love Story (with photos built in). Some of your couples show it to the guests right before they themselves are introduced.

I'm late to this thread but here goes anyway, Depending upon the type of video or slide show, the time to show them can vary greatly.

We produce slide shows and videos and we supply the equipment to show them.

There are many types of slide shows including, simple loops, music video slide shows, videos and even same day edits of the wedding photos or videos.

Some, if not many, B&G's are very insecure about their first dance out on the floor with all eyes on them so we often produce music video slide shows from their photos and the music they will be dancing to. That way the guests are looking from the B&G to the video and back again. It's sort of like Dumbo's magic feather.

We also do slide shows on a loop without musical accompaniment or while music is playing but not linked to the music. We may run this for most of the reception so no one misses an image. Old family and friend photos scanned to JPEG bring back many memories. Family and friends will gather to watch them. Anticipate laughter, tears and hugs.

When a mother was unable to dance with her son (The Groom) we did a tribute to mothers with photos of the B&G's mothers with them while growing up and played it before the B&G’s first dance. We have also done music slide shows to be played during the Mother Groom and Father Bride dances.

We have several screen options from a 40” flat screen to a 9 ft rear projection screen that is draped and decorated in the bridal colors.

Perhaps the simplest way to incorporate a slideshow loop is to put them on a digital photo picture frame and place it on the table with the guest book. It can run continously so everyone will have an opportunity to see them and no part of the reception will be inconvenienced.
