Contests can be great, they raise awareness and depending on the giveaway can be a pretty cheap form of marketing. But just like an awesome blog post, an open house, or any other form of marketing, it has to be promoted. So if you do a contest, try to get as much "juice" out of it as you can. Blog about it, promote that blog, tweet about it, and make sure it runs long enough to get people involved and talking about it.

I would love to say that I thought so but I do think that they can look a bit cheap and tacky. Also, sadly, so many people are scepticle about getting something for nothing and are assuming that there will be a catch.
