Is a Receiving Line at the church still "traditional" or can couples simply greet their guests at the reception table-by-table?

Timing on the wedding day is crucial to make sure that the day goes smoothly.  We find that couples get "bogged down" by lengthy receiving lines and trying to follow all of the "traditions" that people expect.  We dissuade couples from having receiving lines at the church so that they can get to their formal photos faster and then greet their guests at the reception hall.  We also understand that some older guests may not attend the reception and want to greet the couple immediately after the ceremony. What is the current trend???

As a wedding guest the one thing that bothers me about the recieving line is the bridal party that I don't usually know. It makes it awkward because you don't want to ignore them, but you don't want to make them uncomfortable either. I think if you are going to have a recieving line you should have the bride and the groom and the parents.

If you are not going to have one, be sure to try to personally greet all your guests at the reception to thank them for sharing your special day.
